Permanent Makeup

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I really look like myself...only better?

Absolutely! Permanent makeup (cosmetic tattoo) helps give back what time has taken away and saves you the precious time you normally spend “putting on your face." In addition to time, you will save money usually devoted to traditional makeup. Because the colour is placed “in” your skin and not “on” your skin, a more natural, softer look results. Permanent makeup is not necessarily intended to replace cosmetics enitrely.  When you are getting ready for a night-on-the-town or just want a different look, you can apply as much additional makeup as you wish.

What Is Micropigmentation?

Permanent Makeup application (micropigmentation) is the art and science of implanting colour into your skin. It is a non-surgical procedure that has been medically proven to be completely safe. Permanent Makeup is about putting the colour in the right place so you can look better naturally. Specialized instruments allow your Micropigmentation specialist to place colour into the layer of skin known as the dermis. Because the outer most layer of skin, called the epidermis, is always shedding and renewing its self, you are looking at the color throw a thin veil of skin. When a procedure is completed, the colour will appear darker than the final results. This is because the colour is BOTH in the epidermis and the dermis. The colour in the top layer will flake off during the healing process, lightening the overall effect about thirty percent. Micropigmentation is an invasive cosmetic procedure that requires skill and experience to apply.

How long will it take to recover?

It depends on the procedure! You will look like you have had a good cry for several hours following eyeliner. It is advisable to apply cold packs (not ice) for 10 minutes at a time during these first few hours. Also, it is important to wear sunglasses as your eyes may be sensitive to sunlight. Eyebrow procedures have the least inflammation. Lip colour often involves temporary swelling. You must let Mariannthy know if you have a history of fever blisters so medication can be prescribed.

How long will my permanent makeup last?

Micropigmentation lasts a long time, but not forever. As you become accustomed to your new makeup, it is not uncommon to want more. You will want to freshen up your new makeup every couple of years. The darker the colour, the longer it will stay unchanged in your skin. Natural, delicate colors are often more vulnerable to the effects of the sun and breakdown by the body’s natural response.

I am afraid of pain…do the procedures hurt?

Topical anaesthetics have been developed, especially for permanent makeup procedures. These creams and gels are applied to the desired area before and during the procedure to assure you the most comfortable experience possible. Some people describe the sensation as a “tingling” feeling. However, most people still experience some discomfort, especially for lip procedures. How much pain? On a scale of 1-10, you will usually be somewhere between 0-3. Rarely is anything stronger than a Tylenol necessary for the discomfort and you will not have to miss work or take time off to recover.

Is it safe?

Yes. All procedures are performed with disposable supplies and follow public health board regulations of strict sanitation and sterilization guidelines. All pigments are hypoallergenic, containing no emollients, irritants or fragrances.

What if I need an MRI?

Go to for lots of information. By all means get an MRI if you need one. Temporary tingling sensations have been reported and clients say they use cool, wet cotton rounds placed over the eyes. New MRI equipment rarely causes any problem.

What is the Gentle Veil Technique and how does it compare to traditional methods?

The Gentle Veil technique has been successfully developed and perfected by Mariannthy herself. It is gentle and delicate to the tissues of the skin, as it gives a softer and natural appearance on the face. The method known as the Gentle Veil technique is achieved using a hand tool, similar to a pen, creating fine strokes of colour. Custom blended pigments are deposited into the skin successfully with this technique. Tiny stroke like movements by the hand inserts the pigments into the dermis. The Traditional methods of depositing color into the skin involve a tattoo gun that can create bold results, which may look striking and unnatural.
